About Smeatharpe WI
Our WI was founded in 1952 in the rural village of Smeatharpe and has regularly met in the village hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm, with a couple of exceptions: our February meeting is a coffee morning and held in one of our members homes and the January and August meetings are on the second Thursday of the month.
We begin our meetings with the singing of Jerusalem as do many WIs. Following a short period of business we then move onto a speaker or demonstrator. The evening concludes with a social time for our members to chat along with a cup tea, coffee and biscuits. We also eat lots of cake for which we are legendary for baking!
We have a competition each month relating to the topic of the evening which is judged by the speaker. Along with the competition we have flower of the month which is judged by our members who put a coin by their favourite flower. The entry with the most coins wins. This money goes towards the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Collection. This is a world-wide organisation of country-women's societies to which the National Federation of Women' Institute (NFWI) belongs. |
